The 206-acre natural area is seven miles from the main body of the park and borders the Meramec River. Some of these cedars, from 300 to 500 years old, grow out of the rocks along the bluff. The Vilander Bluff Natural Area is a unit of the state park that is located at 7 miles (11 km) northeast of the main body of Its eponymous cliffs harbor unique natural communities, most notably a dry dolomite cliff community with over 200 ancient red cedar trees ( Juniperus virginiana ) that range in age from 200 to 500 years.
